For those with naturally narrow or very sloping shoulders, its tough! There are options, so don’t put up with discomfort and annoyance, and if your current bra is not working, take action.
The number one reason bra straps slip down is mis-treated bras. Putting on a bra by clipping at the front, twisting around to the back, THEN pulling the straps up over the arms, is an unkindness from which your bra can’t return. The back of the bra loses its structure and support, and the straps are irretrievably stretched in no time.
The way to put a bra on is through the arms first, clip at the back, then adjust. If clipping at the back is not possible, go for front opening.
Furthermore, a bra can only be expected to hold its shape and do its job for about 200 wears. After that, the elastic and seams will begin to give out. If the straps are beginning to slip, take a good look at the integrity of the bra generally – has it had its day?
Meanwhile, here are some tips to avoid the slip:
- Wear the bra as firmly as possible around the ribs. The looser the band, the wider the straps will sit. If you start to need a bigger band to stay comfortable, remember the straps will go wider correspondingly. Try and keep your rib measurement in proportion to your natural shoulder width.
- Look for styles where the strap is centred over the cup. Definitely avoid balconette styles (where the straps are attached to the arm side of the cup).
- Racer back styles, where the back of the bra is clipped or covered in completely, can sometimes be effective.
- Silicone “boats” under the straps are a proven remedy. There are also detachable clips which pinch the back straps together.
