Wearing layers is the trick to comfortable dressing all year round

Gone are the days of prickly spencers and itchy tights to keep you warm in the winter. As is the old bulky singlet for absorbing summer sweat.

Fabrics next to your skin are now a pleasure to wear thanks to modern technology, and the blending of natural fibres with silky smooth lycra, tencel, bamboo and other cellulose products.

Start with the thinnest of thin cotton layers in summer. Lightweight tanks or camis in cotton and silk should be a wardrobe staple for comfort, especially when travelling, or working in air conditioning.

As the seasons cool, move to light weight wool vests. Sleeveless, short or long sleeve options. Pretty necklines and wrist treatments mean you can show off these “underlayers”. Many thermal garments don’t even have to be called underwear, and can be attractively and conveniently worn under a pinafore or blazer, with no need to be hidden.

For mid winter, there are heavy weight wools, and cashmere blends for serious warmth. Consider polo necks, even shorts or long johns for ultimate comfort outdoors. Soft, warm and cosy. Also long lasting if you wash in a wool wash and dry flat.

Fleece lined tights are a game changer for stylish mid winter dressing. Not bulky, and a flattering addition to skirts and boots.
