Your wedding day lingerie shouldn’t be an afterthought – but it also shouldn’t be a full-time job. The goal is simple: you want to feel comfortable, supported, and confidently you, from the first photo to the last dance (and yes, through a long sit-down dinner).
Here’s your bridal lingerie checklist – practical, lovely, and designed to help you avoid any last-minute wardrobe wobbles.
Start with the dress (it’s the boss)
Before you buy anything, take a moment to think about what your dress needs underneath:
- Neckline: strapless, plunging, sweetheart, halter?
- Back: low back, open back, illusion?
- Fabric: satin and silk show lines more than lace and crepe
- Fit: fitted through the waist/hips vs floaty and relaxed
If you can, bring a photo of the dress (or better yet, wear a similar top) when shopping. Your lingerie should work with the dress, not argue with it.
The bra: support without stealing the spotlight
For many brides, the “right bra” is a game-changer. Options to consider:
- Strapless bra (best for strapless/off-shoulder styles – fit is everything here)
- Plunge bra (perfect for V-necks without the centre showing)
- Multiway/convertible bra (great if your dress has unusual straps)
- Low-back solutions (depending on how low your dress sits)
Quick fit tip: your band should feel secure (the band does the heavy lifting), and you shouldn’t be relying on straps for survival.
Shapewear: smooth, not squeezed
Shapewear should be about a smooth line and gentle support, not “holding your breath all day”. Choose based on your dress shape:
- High-waisted briefs/shorts for tummy smoothing and comfort
- Mid-thigh shorts if you want anti-chafe + smoothing under skirts
- Shaping slip for an all-over, no-lines finish under fitted dresses
If it rolls, digs, or makes you feel grumpy in the change room, it won’t magically behave on the day.
Underwear: choose what disappears (and stays put)
Even if you’re wearing shapewear, you’ll likely want a comfortable “just in case” option:
- Seam-free, smooth edges (especially for satin/silk)
- Avoid heavy seams and bulky lace where it can show through
- Make sure it’s comfortable enough to wear for hours
A small but important note: try sitting down in it. If it shifts the second you move, it’s not the one.
Accessories that can save the day
These little extras can be absolute heroes:
- Nipple covers (for tricky necklines or lighter fabrics)
- Fashion tape (for secure necklines and peace of mind)
- Bra extenders (helpful if you’re between sizes or want comfort for a long day)
They’re not always needed – but if they are, you’ll be glad you packed them.
Night-before and honeymoon pieces
Even if your wedding-day lingerie is all about function, it’s nice to have something that feels special:
- Soft, breathable sleepwear for the night before (you want to rest)
- A lovely set for after the wedding (comfort + confidence)
- A cosy robe for getting ready photos (and warmth between hair/makeup steps)
Think of it as part practical, part celebration.
Do a full “trial run” (future you will be grateful)
A week or two before the wedding, try the full set together:
- Bra + underwear/shapewear + dress (or similar outfit)
- Walk, sit, lift your arms, do a little “dance test”
- Make sure nothing rolls, rubs, or shows through
This is how you avoid surprise lines in photos – and avoid spending the day adjusting.
Your bridal lingerie checklist
- Dress-friendly bra (strapless/plunge/multiway/low-back as needed)
- Seamless underwear (or shapewear that smooths without rolling)
- Optional shapewear matched to your dress silhouette
- Nipple covers / fashion tape / extender (as needed)
- Comfortable sleepwear + robe for getting ready
- A “special” set for after the wedding (because why not?)
